Crucially, Comet comes with a default search engine set to Perplexity, not Google — a strategic move that cuts directly into Google’s search funnel.


Why this matters: the browser war renews


The web browser has long been more than a software tool; it’s a critical distribution platform. The browser sets defaults, it often determines which search engine gets used, which ad-networks are embedded, and how users link out to content. Opportunity: More efficiency. You might ask your browser “plan my weekend trip” and the AI combs sites, compares flights, summarises articles and books hotels.

Risk: Trust, privacy and security. For example, early reviews of Comet raise concerns: summarisation features may enable malicious commands hidden in pages.

According to cybersecurity firm LayerX, even a carefully crafted link sent through an email, a browser extension, or a malicious website could allow attackers to expose and extract sensitive data from Comet. This reveals a wider concern for the entire category of AI browsers. They are operating on very thin ice when it comes to security, and the industry is only beginning to understand the potential vulnerabilities and attack vectors that come with deeply integrating artificial intelligence into web browsing.


For publishers and advertisers


Opportunity: New formats of engagement; “AI-driven browsing assistants” may open alternative monetisation pathways (e.g., task-completion ads or subscription services).

Risk: Loss of downstream traffic. If users stay inside the assistant/browser environment and don’t click through, page-views could drop; that threatens ad models tied to visits.

Opportunity: Re-architecting the browser as an AI-native experience opens room to capture value previously held by search engines.

Risk: High execution bar. Simply building an AI sidebar isn’t enough. Integration, trust, cross-platform roll-out, security and ecosystem partnerships all matter. Chrome’s incumbency is strong for a reason.
